KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP say members found and disposed of a pipe bomb in a North Shore neighbourhood on New Year’s Day.

In a news release, detachment spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn says officers were alerted to a suspicious item at about 1:20 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 1). It was found on the beach near Schubert Drive and Richmond Avenue.

“Based on the appearance of the item, officers believed it was a very small pipe bomb, which was later confirmed,” said Evelyn. “Police immediately protected the area from public access until the [Explosive Disposal Unit] could attend and safely dispose of the item later that day.”

Investigators are now looking for witnesses as they piece together the origin of the pipe bomb.
