Lease for Aberdeen Tiny Library extended to February; TNRL still planning for South Kamloops library

KAMLOOPS — The Thompson-Nicola Regional Library (TNRL) has extended the lease for the Aberdeen Tiny Library until at least February.

Chief Librarian Judy Moore says the 350-square-foot facility located in the Aberdeen Mall foot court has circulated more than 22,500 books and materials since it opened in November of 2023.

“It’s a very popular little library,” Moore said. “I think it’s been impactful and the public uptick has been fantastic.”

The Tiny Library, which is open between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday, was always meant to be a stopgap measure as the TNRL continues to plan for a new full-service library in southwest Kamloops.

“I think it would be most upsetting to close the doors on the Aberdeen Tiny Library but I think at this juncture we’re just in a situation where we’re looking two to three months ahead and until we actually have a plan, we’re loathe to extend any further out,” Moore said, when asked if the Tiny Library will be kept open until such time a new facility is operational.

“At this point we have undertaken a lease for the Aberdeen Tiny Library until the end of February, and I’ll look very much forward to being able to update your listeners as soon as we have something more concrete in place.”

The TNRD board recently approved spending $465,000 from an existing $1.7 million capital reserve fund for the proposed Southwest Kamloops library on renovations for the North Kamloops library.

“Given real estate costs, we’ve certainly done our due diligence in terms of looking at various sites and options for south Kamloops,” Moore said.

“We recognize that we’re unlikely to purchase a site for a South Kamloops library, so instead we’ll be pivoting and looking at other options that we hope to bring to the board before too long.”
