Kamloops RCMP observing behavioral changes with rollout of body-worn cameras

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops RCMP began rolling out the use of body-worn cameras earlier this month.
Three weeks in, there are now more than 100 officers equipped with the technology in both the Kamloops and T’kemlups Rural detachments. The Mounties are still in the early stages of the initiative, working closely with Crown counsel on how disclosure processes will be handled for charge approvals within the court system.
“I’ve had some feedback from officers with respect to individuals (who) are becoming aware during investigations that they are under recording in public spaces, and we have some reported behavioral changes towards police. I’m confident that this will increase public accountability, transparency — (for) our officers as well,” said Kamloops RCMP Supt. Jeff Pelley.
