OTTAWA — Kamloops native Sawyer Mynio recorded an assist in his first-ever game for Team Canada, as they beat Germany 3-0 at the World Juniors on Sunday (Dec. 29) afternoon.

While Mynio was named to Canada’s roster earlier this month, he was officially registered after star-defenceman Matthew Schafer was injured in Friday’s 3-2 shootout loss to Latvia.

“It’s something you grew up dreaming of,” Mynio said in an article on the Canadian Hockey League website. “It’s my first time wearing the jersey so it will be pretty special to do that. It will go by fast … but I am going to remember it for the rest of my life.”

The 19-year-old Mynio started on Canada’s third defensive paring alongside Kelowna Rockets defenceman Caden Price. Mynio was credited with the primary assist on Price’s goal at 15:02 of the third period, that made it a 2-0 game at the Canadian Tire Centre.

Mynio made a D-to-D pass to Price, whose shot from the point rebounded off the end boards and into the net off the skate of German goaltender Nico Pertuch.

Mynio, a Vancouver Canucks prospect who is captain of the Seattle Thunderbirds in the WHL, finished with one shot on goal and a plus-1 rating in 11:56 of ice time.

Canada also got goals from Oliver Bonk, on the power play, and Mathieu Cataford, into the empty net, to improve to 2-0-0-1 at the World Juniors. Their efforts were aided by goaltender Carter George, who made 25 saves for his second straight shutout at the tournament.

“I just want to go out there and do my part to get this team a win,” said George, who picked up an assist on Cataford’s goal as his shot at the empty net dribbled wide. “We all pitch into the system.”

Canada is gearing up for a New Year’s Eve showdown against the United States with first place in Group A up for grabs.
