Deadline for charitable donations in Canada extended to February 2025

OTTAWA — Canadians will be able to claim charitable donations made until Feb. 28, 2025 on their 2024 tax returns, if the Federal Government is able to pass legislation in the new year.

The government will introduce legislation to extend the donation deadline by two months “to mitigate the impacts” caused by the month-long strike at Canada Post. It comes days after Canada’s premiers wrote to the Prime Minister asking for the extension.

The extension comes as many charities have reported major declines in mail-in donations during the otherwise busy holiday season when people tend to be more generous.

“This extension recognizes the impact that the Canada Post service disruption had on their fundraising campaigns, and will give charities additional time to receive and process donations so that they can continue their vital work,” new Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc said, in a statement.
