Mild temperatures increasing Wildlights attendance

KAMLOOPS -Christmas has come and gone but Kamloops’ night sky is still aglow with more than just stars.

The BC Wildlife Park’s annual Wildlights extravaganza is dazzling visitors once again and according to the park, this year’s mild temperatures have brought visitors in droves.

“The Wildlights season so far has been actually extremely good,” said Glenn Grant, BC Wildlife Park general manager. “Obviously good weather has an awful lot to do with that.”

Grant noted increased attendance from surrounding communities like Salmon Arm, Vernon, and Merritt, attributing the boost to favourable driving conditions.

With 10 days remaining in the event, over 18,000 visitors have already experienced the winter light display, falling short of last year’s record-breaking attendance of 28,000 visitors.

According to Grant, the 23-day Wildlights event plays a crucial role in supporting the park’s operations during the winter and spring months when it’s closed to the public.

“That money is really important,” Grant explained. “We still got [to take care] of the animals. There’s a lot of expenses still with not being open and no revenue coming in.”

The BC Wildlife Park will close after Wildlights concludes and reopen on March 1.

This year’s Wildlights features new attractions, including a well-lit Flinstones Flintmobile, a 34-foot Christmas tree, and a Spider-Man hunt for children.

Wildlights is slated to run from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. until Jan. 5.
