KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP say five impaired drivers were taken off the roads Friday night, Dec. 20.

Police told CFJC Today that four of the five drivers blew over the legal limit, while one blew a warning.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn says police have been conducting enhanced sobriety checks in partnership with ICBC since Dec. 1.

“Throughout every single one of those shifts that they’ve done so far this year, they are pulling impaired drivers off the roads,” Evelyn said, noting these. “It shows that its still a very big problem.”

At this time, its not clear how many impaired drivers have been taken off the roads in the Kamloops area this month. The most recent data from Kamloops RCMP shows 61 impaired drivers taken off the roads in the first nine months of the year.

In B.C., drivers who blow over the legal limit are given a 90-day driving ban and their vehicle is impounded for 30 days. Drivers that blow a warning face three, seven, or 30 day bans, depending on whether its their first, second, or third offence in a five-year period.

“Those sobriety checks don’t just occur on main roads, they also on occur on back roads as well,” Evelyn said. “So people who think they can break the rules and take a chance by taking a back road to avoid detection, they’re wrong.”

“It’s never a good time to take a chance, and when you play that game you are taking a chance. Plan ahead and be responsible.”
