Drop off adjustments made for cervix self-screening kits amid postal disruption

KAMLOOPS — Amid the ongoing postal service disruption, people are being advised of alternative ways to send in cervical self screening kits for lab work.

Tests that may have been caught in the mail disruption will need to be re-taken and submitted again as they’re only valid for a certain amount of time once the sample has been collected. Without Canada Post delivery as an option, people are being asked to either hold on to their unused kits and do the self-collection when mail service returns or drop off their kit samples if they need quicker results.

“We do have some labs who are accepting the kit so you can just find one near you and drop it off that way,” explains Dr. Lily Proctor with BC Cancer. “The other way to do it is to go to your primary care providers’ office, and you can do the self collection there and give it to them, and that goes to the lab through a different courier process.”

Self-collection kits can still be ordered online or by phone, but they won’t be sent out until Canada Post coverage resumes. The kits were rolled out nearly one year ago and Dr. Proctor says more than 60,000 of the units were mailed out between January and June of this year.

“A good majority of those kits that were mailed out were sent to people who had never participated in screening before, so we’re increasing access and getting kits to those who have traditionally had barriers to cervix cancer screening,” she reiterates.
