MERRITT — Merritt City Councillors will get the opportunity to review and discuss the proposed 2025 budget at a special meeting of council on Monday night, Dec. 9.

The meeting is set to get underway at 4:00 p.m. in council chambers.

The City of Merritt’s finance department will present the proposed budget for 2025, which is currently forecasting a tax increase of eight per cent.

“In the prior financial plan, back-to-back 12 per cent increases were premised through 2025 for the municipal tax levy,” the document stated. “Through a combination of operational and service level changes, the municipal tax increase for 2025 is currently at 8 per cent.”

While Monday’s meeting will be open to the public, residents will get a chance to have their say at still-to-be-scheduled budget engagement sessions.

“This presentation will walk through the operating and capital budgets across the City operations using an integrated source and use of funds view,” the document added.

“At the conclusion of the presentation, Council will decide to proceed with scheduling public engagement or will provide staff direction on changes for a follow-up presentation.”

Residents who can’t attend the meeting can watch a live stream of it online on the City of Merritt’s website.

The City of Merritt has to adopt its 2025 financial plan and tax rate bylaw before May 15, 2025.
