COLLINS: Never again shall I watch a Kamloops council meeting

Dec 5, 2024 | 6:00 AM

MAY I NEVER AGAIN bring myself to watch a live broadcast on the city’s web page.

Suffering from a short attention span, I have difficulty paying attention for any length of time. I seldom watch documentaries on TV, unless I watch them in segments. I seldom watch a sports event from start to finish, preferring instead to catch the highlights, where the excitement is. I have stated before that I have never liked attending news conferences or meetings of any sort. Just too boring. My short attention span cost me a lot in high school and university.

All of this leads up to Tuesday’s special council meeting. Bill Sarai was to make a statement regarding his taping of part of a meeting with the mayor a couple of years back. Would he apologize for the taping, would he resign, and what would the council do?

I reasoned that it would likely be a short meeting, so against my better judgment I tuned in. The first thing I noticed as councillors got ready for the meeting, was the tension in the room. “You could cut it with a knife” to paraphrase an old saying. No smiles, no jocularity. It was like they were filming a segment of The Walking Dead.

As the meeting started, it was clear the mayor still didn’t know how to take a vote. It was sloppy at best and certainly didn’t follow Robert’s Rules of Order. Bill Sarai then read his statement of apology. Council will presumably decide at some point if they will take any action. Then the mayor tried to bring up some items relating to previous issues regarding lawsuits, reports of bad behaviour and so on. Obviously expecting that, Councillor Kelly Hall, reading from what appeared to be a prepared statement, shut the mayor down. A quick motion to adjourn

closed everything off immediately — so there it was. Council got up and left, and I guess we’ll find out the next step during the next episode of the soap opera.

This was absolutely crap from start to finish, for everyone involved. I have not observed this kind of behaviour in a long time. And Reid Hamer-Jackson is far from being the only problem. If you watched the video on TV, you would see what I mean. There is no leadership here. None. A sad story indeed.

I will not quickly forget the gong show I saw Tuesday.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
