St. Andrew’s on the Square on track for 2025 reopening: City of Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops says it is making progress on restoring St. Andrew’s on the Square to its former glory.

The iconic church on Seymour Street was damaged by a fire on May 2.

During a presentation to Kamloops council’s Livability and Sustainability Select Committee Tuesday (Dec. 3), Museum Supervisor Julia Cyr said it’s hoped the building could re-open to public bookings by either spring or fall of 2025.

Cyr says the building has been stripped of materials damaged by the fire and suppression efforts — including historic wedding photos and donor recognition plaques.

The Kamloops Fire Rescue response was able to save other important items, such as heritage pews, artifacts, an organ, light fixtures and stained glass windows.

Cyr notes the city is in the process of working through the insurance process to choose a contractor for restoration and rebuilding. Interior design elements will honour the Kamloops Heritage Society, which formerly ran the facility.

“Inspiration will be drawn from light, bright and airy spaces, Gaglardi Park Garden just outside, the stained glass arched windows — and through organic shapes, patterns, materials and textures of the building and its iconic architectural design and heritage features,” she said.

In addition to the heritage feel, the city plans to add some modern touches such as enhanced accessibility and fibre internet to ensure the building remains functional and desirable to the modern-day clientele.

“Our intent is to target long-term needs for the continued public use of the building, while conversation and preservation rest at the beating heart of St. Andrews as one of the oldest public buildings still in use in Kamloops,” said Cyr.
