KAMLOOPS — Canada Post workers are still on picket lines across the country and locally in Kamloops, demanding fair wages and safer working conditions as mediated talks have brought no end to the strike action.

While most mail has been halted, some essential pieces are still be routed to their destinations. That includes the most important mail for the Christmas season — letters for Santa at the North Pole.

“As a union, we decided that is one of the most important reasons for us to address. We don’t want to be stopping work, we don’t want to be out of work and we especially don’t want to make Christmas any harder than it needs to be, especially the children. (That’s) super important. We all address the big old man up north and we need to make sure the kids get their letters out and that they have a good Christmas,” said Randy Fenwick, stationed along the Seymour Street picket line.

Canada Post has entrusted its elves in communities across Canada to get the children’s letters to the jolly old fellow. In Kamloops there are three on-street locations to drop off letters plus some work with elementary schools.

“The easiest way to find us is at one of our three locations here in town. We are at 970 Camosun, that is our delivery plant, and then were are at 1350 Dalhousie Drive, which is our processing plant, and then were are also here downtown trying to catch as many eyes as possible over on Seymour Street between Second and Third Avenues. [Those are] the best locations. There is also another location we can get — some people are going around to schools to pick up letters from teachers,” said Fenwick.
