PIT Stop finds new home for winter as temperatures drop

KAMLOOPS — After nearly three months of operating out of the Kamloops YMCA parking lot, PIT Stop Kamloops has found a new home for the cold winter months ahead.

PIT Stop was forced outside following the devastating Kamloops United Church fire in August of this year. Even without a proper kitchen space, PIT Stop was able to serve around 200 meals every Sunday to those in need, thanks to the help of local community groups and a food truck.

“We are always grateful for the community of Kamloops, especially now (that) we have St. Paul’s Cathedral Anglican Church helping us with the hall to serve the meal starting from the December 1, 2024,” said Valentine Uwakwe, PIT Stop Coordinator. “We also appreciate Cobbs Bread, Kamloops Food Bank and CMHA Kamloops for even providing us with a kitchen space to make these hot meals. This is amazing, coming together to make things work in Kamloops.”

PIT Stop will now be set up at the St. Paul’s on Nicola Avenue between Third and Fourth Avenues for its weekly Sunday dinners. In addition to providing a warm space, the church hall allows the community to come back together to sit down for a meal as a group.

The group has also confirmed its annual Christmas dinner will happen on December 15 at Sandman Centre.

“We always provide things like gift cards for groceries for all the guests and also a goodie bag containing warm items — toques, socks, mittens and gloves for everyone,” said Uwakwe. “That is why we are calling the community again to help us if they want to help by donating such items. Please feel free to donate such items at Kamloops United Church between now and the December 11 so we can put them together and give to the community on the 15.”
