Council approves North Shore access hub shelter, shortens permit to 20 months

KAMLOOPS — After a marathon session hearing from members of the public, Kamloops council has approved a temporary use permit for a North Shore shelter.

The permit for the access hub shelter at 142 Tranquille Road was approved by a 7-1 vote, with only Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson opposed.

Hamer-Jackson was not in favour of a ‘wet’ shelter — meaning the low-barrier nature would provide beds for those regardless of their sobriety.

City staff had recommended a 36-month permit for the facility but council voted to shorten that timeline to 20 months, meaning it will line up with the 20-month lease agreement between property owner ARPA Investments and BC Housing, who will fund ASK Wellness to operate the shelter.

Before making the decision, council heard from a long line of attendees at Tuesday’s regular meeting, with many on each side of the issue.

CFJC Today‘s Michael Reeve will file a full report on the decision Wednesday (Nov. 27).
