KAMLOOPS — It was a perfect swansong for Kamloops native Maddy Gobeil and her University of Fraser Valley (UFV) Cascades at the Tournament Capital Centre this weekend.

The fifth-year guard, a former South Kamloops Titan, had a game-high 28 points to lead the Cascades to a 76-27 victory over the TRU WolfPack in women’s basketball action Saturday (Nov. 16).

The lopsided win – or loss depending on how you interpret the result – came in what was Gobeil’s final Canada West game in her hometown.

“I think it meant a lot to her. It’s a special weekend for her and she has a lot of friends and family up here and she got a bit emotional after the game and thanked the team for playing hard for her,” Cascades head coach Al Tuchscherer said of Gobeil.

UFV raced to an early 13-4 lead in the first quarter with seven of those points coming from Gobeil. The visitors led 35-12 at the half, and stifled their opposition while piling on the points in the third and fourth quarters at the TCC.

“I think TRU played a lot tougher tonight, and they made us do a few things early on, but we ended up wearing them down,” Tuchscherer added. “It gave us a chance to play some of our younger players, and they can play they just need that bit of experience.”

“It’s good to see them out there and they all did some good things this weekend.”

It was a similar story Friday night as Gobeil finished with a game-high 21 points in just 22 minutes of action, to lead UFV to a 87-44 win.

With the two wins in Kamloops, the Cascades move to 5-1 on the season while the WolfPack remain winless at 0-6.

WolfPack men split series with Cascades

In men’s basketball action Saturday, Steve Stinson – a third-year guard from San Diego, California, dropped a career-high 24 points and added four rebounds and two steals as TRU came away with a 71-54 win at the TCC Saturday.

Tied at 19-19 going into the second quarter, the WolfPack trailed by two points at the half, 32-30. They then held the Cascades to just eight points in the third and piled in 22 points of their own in the fourth to earn a convincing win.

The win gives the WolfPack the split as the dropped Friday night’s game by a score of 81-73. Second-year guard Dami Farinloye led the way with a team-high 16 points while Stinson finished with 12 points and three assists.

Saturday’s win gives the WolfPack men a 3-3 record in Canada West, the same as UFV, as both teams are tied for third in the Pacific Division.

The WolfPack will head down to Langley next weekend to take on the Trinity Western Spartans in a double header on Nov. 22 and 23.
