COLLINS: John Horgan had ‘the gift’
SOME POLITICIANS transcend the party they represent. John Horgan, who passed away this week, was such a person. I liked the way be could portray someone you could trust. I have no idea if you could trust him, but that’s the feeling I got.
Carole James was another leader I felt I could trust. I always enjoyed talking to former attorney general Bud Smith. He always was able to talk logically and made sure you understood why his arguments made sense. Pat Wallace always shot for the heart, making common sense points that were valid no matter what party was in power. Peter Milobar makes me laugh because he has a way of appearing like the boy next door, when he really is extremely sharp. He would make an excellent premier.
David Eby could not hold a candle to John Horgan, just as John Rustad couldn’t hold a candle to Christy Clark.
Some of the people you trust will not get the job done. But feeling that they are in your corner going to bat for you goes a long way to restore faith in what is a rapidly declining confidence in those we have elected to lead us. If for no other reason than that, John Horgan will leave a legacy that will transcend any of the “hard accomplishments” he will be remembered for.
