BC Wildfire Service to conduct pile burn near Merritt Speedway
MERRITT — The BC Wildfire Service and the Lower Nicola Fire Department will be working on a controlled burn near the Merritt Speedway, starting as early as this Monday, Nov. 11.
Crews will be burning approximately 75 piles, just east of Mamet Lake Ranch Road, with the work expected to last until the end of the month, as long as the weather remains favourable.
“This project is taking place for community protection purposes, and in order to clean up debris from the chainsaw training that took place in the area,” the BC Wildfire Service said, in a statement.
Residents in the City of Merritt and in Lower Nicola as well as those travelling along Highway 8 may see smoke in the area as this work takes place.
