WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — A pair of prescribed burns will make smoke visible near the City of Williams Lake and along Highway 5 from Merritt to Hope.

The BC Wildfire Service says it will carry out a 23-hectare pile burning on Fox Mountain east of Williams Lake in order to reduce the wildfire hazard and restore local Douglas Fir stands to a natural and more desirable state.

In a news release, the wildfire service says pile burning may begin as early as Friday (Nov. 1) and continue periodically until March 20, depending on suitable weather and site conditions. Smoke and flames may be visible from Highway 97 and the south side of Williams Lake.

Further south, the wildfire service will carry out a prescribed burn of 10 piles nearly 3.5 kilometres west of the Village of Brookmere for “community protection purposes.” The burns could take place as early as Friday and are expected to continue through the middle of November.
