KAMLOOPS – The Know Your Neighbour Walk was started in 2012 by local members of the Sikh community, honouring the birthdate of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, founder of Sikhism, and his universal message of our common humanity.

“Over the years, we’ve continued this walk as a way of supporting brotherhood and sisterhood to build bridges of mutual respect and understanding across the divides, to express our unity and support for each other in the face of rising division, hate, bigotry,” said Bill Sundhu, one of the walk’s original organizers.

Since 2012, the walk has become an annual tradition for the Sikh community. This year’s walk takes place Oct. 26 at Riverside Park, at 11:00 a.m. The group will meet at the Meeting of the Waters Promenade.

Sundhu is hoping community members – not just those of the Sikh faith — choose to participate.

“We started the walk as a way of getting to know our neighbours, to say, knock on the door of your neighbours, bring them out. Let’s get to know each other and support each other in friendly relations,” said Sundhu.

“Also with the rise of loneliness and isolation, to get people, you know, knocking on the doors of shut-ins, the elderly, bring them out and say, you know, ‘I’m your neighbour. Let’s go for a walk together and that way we build those bonds of friendship and mutual understanding and share of each other.’”
