70 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — Volunteers with the BC SPCA are giving thanks after 10 cats were rescued near 70 Mile House on Thanksgiving weekend.

In a post to its website, the agency says the cats were found abandoned at the side of the road.

“While driving through 70 Mile House on her way home to Vancouver, a woman observed a small canvas pet carrier at the side of the road in a truck pullout,” said the BC SPCA’s Jodi Dunlop. “She pulled over and was shocked to discover 10 cats including a mom and her five kittens and a pregnant cat in the carrier.”

The woman who found the cats transported them to Vancouver while her husband made arrangements with the BC SPCA.

Dunlop notes the cats were all healthy — and the pregnant kitty turned that 10 count into 15 a short time later.

“The nursing mom and her kittens were placed in a foster home the day after their arrival,” said Dunlop. “We were able to find another foster home for the pregnant cat a few days later. She gave birth to five kittens the day she arrived. This kind woman saved more than 10 cats, she saved 15!”

The BC SPCA reminds the public abandoning animals is an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
