Ministry of Forests preparing hazards report for residents affected by Shetland Creek Wildfire

KAMLOOPS — Residents impacted by the Shetland Creek wildfire will soon learn of post-fire hazards in the area.
The Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) and Cook’s Ferry Indian Band (CFIB) will host a pair of public meetings with B.C.’s Ministry of Forests on Wednesday, Oct. 30. An online session will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and an in-person session will take place at the CFIB office at 3691 Deer Lane in Spences Bridge from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
In a news release issued Wednesday (Oct. 23), the TNRD says district officials and the CFIB will answer questions related to recovery while the ministry will present a post-wildfire geohazard risk report for the Shetland Creek wildfire. The TNRD adds the same material will be presented at both meetings.
“Following large-scale wildfires, the Ministry of Forests facilitates the creation of a post-wildfire hazard analysis report,” the TNRD states. “This report identifies areas that may be subject to geohazard risks caused by wildfire, such as sediment transport and erosion due to debris flows, flooding, rock falls or landslides. This report also identifies structures and lands that may be at risk.”
