Kamloops council to mayor: show us your conduct has improved and we’ll reinstate you to TNRD, airport authority

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops council says Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson will have to come forward with hat in hand if he wants to be reinstated to a pair of external boards.

On July 19, council removed Hamer-Jackson from the Thompson Nicola Regional District Board of Directors and as a member of the Kamloops Airport Authority Society. In rescinding the appointments, council cited the mayor’s “persistent refusal to adhere to sound municipal governance practices” as outlined in the report from municipal adviser Henry Braun.

At that time, council told Hamer-Jackson the decision would be reviewed in three months.

In a news release issued Thursday (Oct. 24), council said it hasn’t seen the improvement from Hamer-Jackson it hoped to see.

“Council continues to have concerns that Mayor Hamer-Jackson’s conduct is causing significant legal and reputational risk to the municipal corporation,” council said in the news release. “To date, Mayor Hamer-Jackson has not demonstrated to council that he has complied with any of Municipal Advisor Braun’s Recommendations for Improved Governance Skills.”

Council says Hamer-Jackson can apply for reinstatement by way of notice of motion at a closed council meeting. The eight councillors will then consider whether Hamer-Jackson has demonstrated “sufficient evidence of improvement in his governance skills” by abiding by Braun’s recommendations.
