City of Kamloops served with legal papers over alternative approval process

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops was served with a legal petition on Tuesday (Oct. 22) afternoon during the Public Inquiries portion of its regular council meeting.
The alternative approval process (AAP) was recently announced as successful in approving the borrowing of $275 million to build a performing arts centre in downtown Kamloops and an arena multi-plex in Dufferin. While she stated she supports the two projects, Kathrine Wunderlich was unhappy with what she is calling the “undemocratic” alternative approval process and, for that reason, decided on Sunday to formally petition the courts to force a full referendum.
“Our democratic rights are being eroded all the time, and this is something that we, as the people, need to stand up for and say, ‘Hey, enough is enough,'” said Wunderlich. “Our democratic right is important and it’s important for all of us — for you, me, everyone. Is it that we only have a democratic right when we vote and then when we vote them in and they make all these promises then they shut you out? That’s not democratic.”
