Search continues to find occupants of Coquitlam home washed away in mudslide: RCMP

COQUITLAM – Police say first responders are still searching for the residents of a home that was washed away in Coquitlam’s northeast end.

Coquitlam RCMP say the mudslide occurred around noon on Saturday in an area near Quarry Road, between Calgary Drive and MacIntyre Road.

Spokesperson Corp. Alexa Hodgins says that after liaising with family members, the owner of the affected home is still unaccounted for as of Sunday afternoon.

B.C.’s River Forecast Centre issued flood warnings on Saturday after some areas on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland were pummeled by an atmospheric river.

The Coquitlam area was included in the alert, along with parts of Tofino, Bamfield, and Port Renfrew, as work crews battled clogged drainage systems affecting roads.

In a social media post on Sunday morning, city officials said several roads and trails in Coquitlam were closed due to flood concerns.

Hodgins says the mudslide has made a three-kilometer portion of Quarry Road ‘impassable’ for residents trying to flee the area.

“First responders are in contact with the residents and confirmed that are able to shelter in place, but there is no updated timeline as to when the road will be cleared,” Hodgins said.

Coquitlam Search and Rescue and Coquitlam Fire and Rescue were still conducting searches along Quarry Road as of Sunday afternoon.
