TSB issues report into fiery 2022 crash between train and pickup truck east of Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) has released its report into a fiery collision between a train and a CP Rail pickup truck that took place nearly two years ago just east of Kamloops.

On December 29, 2022, an eastbound CP freight train struck a hi-rail pickup truck parked on the tracks near Lafarge, causing it to burst into flames. The truck was not occupied at the time and there were no injuries.

In its report issued Thursday (Oct. 17), the TSB says a track supervisor was inspecting the north and south main tracks on the day of the incident and had requested a stoppage of rail traffic on the north track.

The supervisor then noticed a defect on the south track and requested a second stoppage on that track.

However, when the supervisor attempted to cancel the first stoppage request, he inadvertently cancelled the second one instead.

That led to the train’s operator to believe the south track was safe to use when, in fact, it was not.

The TSB says it has recommended the railway — now named Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) — implement more stringent measures for cancelling track occupancy permits (TOPs).

CPKC says it has put several new safety measures in place, including beefing up the processes around requesting and cancelling TOPs
