Erosion rehabilitation work beginning on popular trail within Sahali Terrace Nature Park

KAMLOOPS — A popular trail within Sahali Terrace Nature Park will be unavailable for most of the autumn and winter.

Starting Monday, Oct. 28, the City of Kamloops says crews will work to rehabilitate the advanced erosion in Lower Springhill Creek adjacent to Xget’tem’ Trail. The work includes upgrading the drainage pipework, armouring portions of the creek with large rocks and restorative planting.

In a news release issued Thursday (Oct. 17), the city states the trail will be closed from Monday to Friday until spring 2025. However, it will reopen Friday nights for weekend use.

The work comes after a substantial rain event in 2014 caused massive erosion in the Springhill Creek corridor. While spot repairs were completed, the city says the remaining sections of the channel now require erosion protection work.

Springhill Creek serves as the major drainage corridor for Upper Sahali and a significant portion of Aberdeen.

Upon request from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the city says no mature trees will be removed during the erosion protection work. While all mature conifers will be retained, the city says some smaller trees and large shrubs must be removed to locally reshape the creek and preserve the integrity of Xget’tem’ Trail.
