KAMLOOPS – October 6 to 12 is Fire Prevention Week across Canada. This year’s theme is, “Smoke alarms: make them work for you!“

The week happens every year during October. This year, it’s aimed to educate people about the life-saving importance of having smoke alarms in your home and making sure they are working properly.

“Smoke alarms increase your chances of surviving a fire by 50 per cent, so it’s really important to have working smoke alarms in your home,” said Lyle Weninger, Kamloops Fire Rescue’s chief of fire prevention. “It’s your first line of defense against a fire. You should have one on every floor, one in each bedroom. One thing people forget is that they should be changed out every ten years. They’ll have a date on them… and they expire after ten years.”
