Oct 4, 2024 | 7:00 PM

KAMLOOPS — October is National Hispanic Heritage Month, an opportunity to recognize and acknowledge the contributions the Hispanic community has made to Canada.

Plenty of events and displays of culture are planned for October, starting Saturday morning (Oct. 5) as the Hispanic Society of Kamloops is hosting a celebration at the library starting at 10:00 a.m. Events will be happening around town every Saturday throughout October.

“This month is so special for us because we celebrate our contribution to the Canadian culture,” said society member Maria Chame. “That is why it is so important to show our culture. It’s important to show our history and how we contribute to Canadian society.”

The Kamloops Museum and Archives is also taking part in the month as they invite residents to check out the ‘The things we carry with us’ display. The display shows off the culture and traditions of Mexico and Colombia through fabric and fashion. Collaborating with the Hispanic Society of Kamloops.

“We actually collaborated with them first in January,” said Meghan Stewart of the Kamloops Museum and Archives. “They came in and they did a fantastic puppet show and crafts. They also brought in all of these fantastic dresses and costumes and really beautiful items of clothing. So when we started thinking about this show, the link was kind of already there, and we thought that would be a great first group to kind of feature and honor.”
