As calendar turns to October, winter tire regulations come into effect

KAMLOOPS — Winter tires are now required for travelling on highway routes around Kamloops.

Major highways in British Columbia that traverse mountain passes require vehicles to be equipped with winter tires with M-and-S marking or the ‘mountain and snowflake’ image on the sidewall from October 1 forward.

“A winter tire stops on average about 40 per cent quicker than an all-season tire, so that 40 per cent can help from running into somebody, sliding through a stop sign, or bumping into somebody going through a sidewalk, too,” said Kamloops Integra Tire owner Mike Donaldson. “There are other benefits to the tires, too. Of course, they stick and they work better on the highways, you don’t break loose or anything like that. But that is the main benefit of the tire — it stops a little bit quicker and it holds on when you are travelling on the highway.”

Integra has been fielding calls all day on Tuesday (Oct. 1), with appointments booked solid into next week. Even as the requirement comes in, every year Donaldson sees a high number of customers flood the store after the first snowfall of the season.

“We are looking at next week. There are a few spaces left here and if anybody needs newer tires, we have some spaces available for that,” said Donaldson. “It hits really quick. To be honest, I think about it on Tuesday morning before I’m heading in and having my last cup of tea, thinking, ‘Here it comes now for six-and-half, seven weeks there.”
