COLLINS: Set aside some time this week to follow some heavy duty stories
Sep 22, 2024 | 6:00 AM
I HAVE ALL MY FAVOURITE news sites bookmarked and ready to catch all the big stories that could happen this week. From the city to the province to the country to the worldwide scene, you will find it hard to ignore all these stories even if you’re not a newshound.
This list is certainly not complete — it’s more about the stories that will be commanding my attention.
- At school board Monday night (Sept. 23), much discussion will take place around a clerical error that could cost us millions to claw back the amount of money that will have been spent prior to the error being discovered. No evil intention but costly just the same. Big mistake. They happen. But $2 million is a lot to put back in the account.
- Tuesday, the city council will have its hands full with two things of major importance. We should receive the official results of the AAP voting, to see the number of people who don’t want to spend money on a new performing arts centre and multiplex sports facility. If the “no” tops 10 per cent of eligible voters, that would force either a costly, full-fledged referendum or abandoning the whole idea. Personally, I think council should back off if the vote isn’t favourable. If those opponents can’t see the advantages of these facilities, then maybe we should hold off on the referendum until these people really see how much more costly construction will be when the two buildings eventually have to be built. And they will be required. The other thing council will have to consider quickly is to plan an agenda to see the reconstruction of the Red Bridge. It burned down last week — a critical link between the city and the Tk’emlups community, as well as all the businesses who occupy the Mount Paul Industrial Park. The band, the city and the province all have to understand the urgency of putting the timeline in place as quickly as possible.
- On the provincial front, the battle is starting to heat up as people try to decide who they want to put their trust in. The Conservatives seem more popular as a party but David Eby would appear to have more popularity than John Rustad. Personally, I don’t have a lot of faith in any of the leaders. And what we’re left with is a choice between the left and the right, and no one in between.
- And Tuesday marks another significant event. The federal Conservative Party is planning to put forth a non-confidence motion in the government. It’s highly unlikely it will pass but it could pave the way for more down the road.
- And I would be remiss if I didn’t remind you of all the lies, half-truths, conspiracy theories and the like in the neck-and-neck fight for the U.S. presidency.
- Oh, and there are lots of regular series starting up again and new movies streaming. However, if you’re watching a sitcom, make sure you’re watching the sitcom or you could be watching Harris and Trump by mistake. You don’t need to worry, though. The comedy value of both is about the same. Although really, you have to have a much higher IQ to watch the sitcom.
