2nd annual Every Child Matters hockey game set for Saturday at Sandman Centre

KAMLOOPS – This Saturday (Sept. 21) marks the second annual Every Child Matters hockey event.

Last year, the event was held in Williams Lake, but this year it will be taking place at Sandman Centre with its much larger capacity.

“Last year was our first year and a learning experience and we had it in William’s Lake,” said Phyllis Webstad, CEO of the Orange Shirt Society. “It was smaller and this year it’s – I’d say ten times bigger. We have many well-known Indigenous hockey players from all sorts of leagues, including the NHL.”

According organizers, the Every Child Matters hockey event was created to encourage awareness and action for truth and reconciliation through sport.

This year, organizers are welcoming various cast members from the TV show ‘Shoresy’ as well as an array of other sporting celebrities, all in support of the Orange Shirt Society.

Webstad says the Orange Shirt Society honors and supports Indian residential school survivors and their families.

Webstad added that the Orange Jersey Project is an initiative through the society that emphasizes sports and focuses on the intergenerational impact of residential schools on survivors’ families.

The festivities start at 9:00 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at Sandman Centre.
