Indigenous nations from Australia, New Zealand and Canada visit former Kamloops Residential School
KAMLOOPS – Three Indigenous nations from Australia, New Zealand and Canada came to Tk’emlups Friday (Sept. 13), visiting the Tracing Indigenous Footsteps Cross-Culture Exchange. The group is touring around the province to expand their knowledge of Indigenous cultures.
Stopping at Tk’emlups Friday, they toured the former Kamloops Indian Residential School — a uniting moment to learn about history together as one.
“Us Maori have our own trauma,” Waruwhakamaharatanga Kerr-Taoho of the Tuhoe Ngati Tahu told CFJC Today, “regarding the loss of our language and the taking away of our culture. To be able to go [into the former residential school] with our Canadian family and support them, that was a very beautiful moment. To pay respects to the people of this land and the lost spirits of this land, very empowering.”
