Kamloops Community Services seeking information related to fatal dog attack Sunday

KAMLOOPS — Details are slim around what will happen to three dogs involved in the killing of another dog over the weekend, but City of Kamloops Community Services says an investigation is underway.

The city’s Community Services Manager Will Beatty says CSOs and RCMP in Kamloops were called to a grim scene Sunday (Sept. 8), when a fatal dog mauling had been reported in the 600-block of Richmond Avenue around 6:15 a.m.

“Somebody had called in and had mentioned there were three dogs at large, potentially jumped into a property owner’s backyard and killed a dog in that backyard,” Beatty told CFJC on Monday (Sept. 9). “Community Service Officers and the RCMP attended. We are under an active investigation right now. We do have three dogs in our possession that were voluntarily surrendered to Community Services based on the request of the RCMP and CSOs.”

Kamloops has a bylaw only allowing two dogs to be registered at a single address, unless a variance is granted. When asked if the three dogs reported in the attack were all living at the same address or belonged to the same owner, Beatty did not comment as the investigation is still active.

The animals are currently in custody of Community Services and Beatty says it’s too early to say what will be done with them.

“We have many investigative techniques that we use in these cases and it has to do with toxicology reports, attendance to vets, animal behavioural specialists who will come in and also assist in any classification of these dogs as per our dog responsibility bylaw.”

The city is also asking for any video or photos of the incident to be sent to Community Services to help with their investigation.

“Any indication if these dogs had been out before is also key information for Community Services in the investigation piece,” adds Beatty. “A lot of times people don’t report specific attacks that may have been later to report. But we do encourage folks that, if there is a dog at large, if there is something that Community Services can come and respond to or investigate, I would encourage them to bring that information forward.”
