KAMLOOPS — Hundreds of Kamloops seniors made their way to Riverside Park Friday afternoon (Sept. 6) for the city’s annual Seniors’ Picnic.

The free event is for adults aged 55 and older, with lunch dished up by the Kamloops Paddlewheelers Lions Club and a performance on the main stage from the Kamloops Rube Band. The hot weather didn’t deter the crowd who came out, and those who spoke with CFJC said it’s become a popular way to spend an afternoon catching up with friends.

“I register all of [my friends] and I say, ‘Okay let’s have fun and meet people, enjoy the Kamloops Rube Band and the music representing Kamloops,'” Elsie Chung told CFJC from a picnic table at the park. “They don’t speak English so I usually register them and bring them out, and then even I go out for the light tour at Christmas — so thank you, City of Kamloops.”

Many have opted to make it a habit to come out each year, including Jean Neill.

“Oh, you’ve got to come. It’s great. The people are friendly, the people who are working the event are great, the music is awesome and it’s a wonderful few hours out of the house,” she adds.

The Friday event was the result of rescheduling efforts after the initial date for the picnic was moved in response to a heat event earlier this summer.
