KAMLOOPS – As kids head back to school next week, the Kamloops RCMP is reminding everyone to slow down and stay alert.

“There’s going to be a lot of kids on the roadway. Some of them might be distracted and excited over being back to school,” said Cpl. Crystal Evelyn of the Kamloops RCMP.

“Please make sure that you’re obeying speed limit signs that you’re giving yourself extra time to get to your destinations and that you’re getting rid of eliminating any distractions.”

Evelyn says that doesn’t just apply to drivers, parents are encouraged to talk to their kids about pedestrian safety and limit the distractions on the walk to school.

As 30 km/h school zones come back into effect, Evelyn says police and speed watch members will be present in the community serving as a reminder to slow down.

“School zones are back in play,” adds Evelyn. “So remember to be looking at the times that are listed on the school zones, reducing your speed as soon as you enter that speed zone and just being very aware of your surroundings.”
