Aug 30, 2024 | 6:00 PM

KAMLOOPS– Kamloops RCMP have issued a reminder to the public to be cautious when punching in a debit or credit card PIN, after two incidents of reported card theft and fraud.

“Just last week (Aug. 20), we had an incident where a PIN number was obtained and then it was followed by a distraction theft, in which the person’s financial records were stolen and then used,” says Kamloops RCMP’s, Cpl. Crystal Evelyn.

In the Aug. 20 incident, the suspects were described as follows:
Male
  • Caucasian or fair skin
  • Approximately 6’0”
  • 250 to 275 lbs
  • Moustache and beard Brown hair
  • Wearing a white short, shorts, and a camp ball cap

Female

  • Olive complexion
  • Slim, approximately 120 lbs,
  • 5’4″
  • Long dark hair, parted centrally
  • Wearing a white t-shirt with a black and white print of a face on it, and dark blue or black ankle length skirt.

Evelyn says that was the second time a PIN-related theft incident has been reported in the last few months. Though police are unsure if the two incidents are related, the public is reminded to stay aware of their surroundings and cover the keypad when punching in a PIN.

“You don’t know all the time who’s behind you and just be aware of your surroundings and I know sometimes it feels awkward,” she explains, “Like you don’t want people to think that you’re questioning whether they’re trustworthy or not, but make it a habit. That’s just a good safety safety precaution. So do the best that you can to help reduce your risk.”

Anyone with information related to the theft is asked to call Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2024-27423.
