MERRITT, B.C. — Merritt residents concerned with the relocation of the city’s homeless shelter will have an opportunity to have their voices heard at an upcoming public meeting on September 5.

Earlier this summer, the Nicola Valley Shelter Society was forced to shut down the operation at the Desert Inn on Voght St. because of what was described as the facilities “deplorable state.” At that time, B.C. Housing’s Shrief Fadl stated seven people were left without a place to stay following the closure.

At this past Tuesday’s Merritt City Council meeting, Merritt’s Chief Administrative Officer, Cindy White, confirmed that the new shelter will be located at the Knights Inn at 2702, Nicola Avenue, following a recent meeting with officials at B.C. Housing.

In recent weeks, angry residents of the city have taken to social media concerned about a multitude of serious interactions between the homeless and residents that has many afraid for their safety.
