SICAMOUS, B.C. — The driver of an eastbound semi-truck was killed when the vehicle crashed through a railing on the Bruhn Bridge just west of Sicamous at about 6:45 a.m. on Saturday (Aug. 24) and fell about 60 feet before plunging into Sicamous Narrows, according to a media release on Saturday night from the Columbia Shuswap Regional District.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and the driver is believed to be the only occupant of the semi-truck, according to an RCMP press release.

The bridge is open to two-way vehicle traffic, with a speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour in place as of Sunday morning.

There may be single-lane alternating traffic during the truck recovery process, which is expected to take place on Sunday (Aug. 25) morning.

Staff and contractors from the Ministry of Environment are assessing the diesel spill from the truck and working on clean-up measures.

Interior Health reports the fuel spill does not appear to pose a significant risk to drinking water supplies in the area, according to the CSRD media release.

Boat traffic has resumed in the Sicamous Narrows, with boaters advised to pay attention and avoid the marked buoys that indicate the submerged truck.

Guard-rail repair on the bridge is likely to begin on Monday.
