Rainfall warning issued for South Thompson region

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement on Saturday (Aug. 24) morning to note at-times heavy rainfall is expected in the South Thompson region.

A low pressure system is expected to bring rain, with between 20 millimetres and 40 millimetres expected to fall.

Rain is expected to taper off into showers on Saturday afternoon.

The statement notes the enhanced risk of landslides in vulnerable areas, particularly those affected by recent wildfires (burn scars).

The combination of heavy rainfall and potentially unstable soils could trigger landslides or debris flows, posing potential hazards to public safety, infrastructure and natural landscapes.

The anticipated high precipitation rates over a short duration could lead to water pooling in areas with poor drainage, exacerbating localized flooding concerns, according to the statement.

Communities with historically lower drainage capacities should be particularly vigilant.
