KAMLOOPS– Just after 2:00 p.m. on Monday (Aug. 19), Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) crews were called to the Mount Paul Industrial Park for what was reported as a landscape fire.

“Upon arrival, crews saw heavy, thick, black smoke [and] called for extra resources to support the suppression activities,” said KFR Deputy Chief Ryan Cail, adding that with in a half-hour, crews had the fire knocked down.

“But there was definitely a lot of fuel and industrial type products that were involved in the fire, so a bit of a defensive approach at first into an offensive knockdown.”

Cail said three KFR trucks responded to the fire in addition to RCMP and CSO members who assisted in re-directing traffic.

“They did shut down the Red Bridge, just given the thick, black column of smoke – we wanted to err on the side of caution for pedestrians or all the other traffic of such until we knew exactly what we found.”

No injuries have been reported at this time but the Ministry of Environment has been called in to assess any possible fuel and byproducts leaking into the ground and near by river.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
