KAMLOOPS — Final preparations are underway ahead of Kamloops Pride Week which begins next week in the Tournament Capital.

The week long celebration begins on Monday (Aug 19) with events for Kamloops residents of all ages and sexual orientations across the city. All culminating next Sunday (Aug 25) for the annual pride parade down Victoria street followed by the festival in Riverside Park.

“This next week we will kick off with the puzzle competition at Tumbleweed Toys, we will also have Hyperfixation Haven where people can gather in MacArthur Island Park to speak about their special interests. We will also have a dance for everyone 19+ as well as a youth dance in Kelson Hall. There will also be a drag brunch and drag story time as well,” highlighted Eliana Baboiu, Pride Kamloops’ Resource Coordinator.

Last year Kamloops Pride was forced to deal with some protestors during their drag story time, and noted that they have put a security plan in place to ensure the event can be run smoothly and safely in 2024 for all involved.

“Although it is 2024 I don’t just find it unfortunate that we still have to strive for inclusion and acceptance but also in the past year we have seen a backsliding with LGBTQ+ rights as we’ve seen anti-LGBTQ+ bills passed in three different provinces in Canada. And we have also seen a rise in hate,” added Baboiu.
