KAMLOOPS — A little bit of rain on Friday (Aug 16) couldn’t dampen the spirits of golfers out at Rivershore Golf Club for the 16th Annual ALS Golf Tournament of Hope.

Kamloops and Rivershore have become a staple summer event host for the ALS Society of British Columbia, with their annual golf tournament helping to raise money for several initiatives in the province. But while the fundraising component is crucial, the 18 holes also serve a much bigger purpose for the society.

“Obviously funds are easy to measure, tangible. But I think the awareness and the gathering that we have in Kamloops for the ALS Golf Tournament of Hope is really the point of this event,” said ALS Society of BC Executive Director Donald Miyazaki. “Obviously the money raised goes to good causes, but really to gather so many individuals that have an ALS connection, that is really the goal, to make sure we can celebrate and they can honour somebody out there.”

The money raised stays in B.C., with it distributed through two streams. The first 70 per cent goes towards the patient services program which helps provide equipment to people in need.

“The other 30 per cent goes to a Kamloops Fund, which is the Kamloops connection. It goes towards purchasing ALS communication equipment, and helps people really who have the inability to speak, it helps them to speak to communicate with their loved ones. So the funds are definitely going towards a worthy cause,” said Miyazaki.
