KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) has partnered with the office of the BC Fire Commissioner to provide smoke detectors to homes in high risk areas of the city.

The goal is for KFR to deliver and install 600 smoke detectors this year across areas of the city and T’kemlups including Westsyde, the North Shore, downtown and Sahali as those areas have seen the most structure fire calls in recent years.

“In targeted areas based on our fire data and their (Fire Commissioner) census and fire data as well. So we have the crews out canvasing neighbourhoods, knocking on doors, asking if they have smoke alarms and then installing them where they are needed,” said KFR Life Safety Educator Cpt. Jeff Pont.

The initiative is being realized with no cost to Kamloops homeowners.

The smoke detectors being installed come with a 10 year battery life but residents are still advised to check them monthly to ensure they are in good working order.

“The important thing now is that you have one on every floor, one outside of every sleeping area and then one in each sleeping area as well,” stated Pont. “It’s better to have inter-connected ones, a lot of the new houses have to have inter-connected ones, but what we are installing is the battery one, they are good for 10 years. They have the battery built in so you don’t have to replace it.”
