COLLINS: Do we spend too much on spectacles like the Olympics?

Aug 11, 2024 | 6:00 AM

AS THE OLYMPICS come to a close today, we ask ourselves, was the cost worth it? Was it worth the money to put this event on?

In many ways, big events like the Olympics or the World Cup give us a big lift. Canada should be happy with its performance. In the pool, on the field, we performed at a superior level. To see tiny nations compete with just one athlete and have that athlete wind up on the podium was inspiring.

The Opening Ceremonies were much more impressive than the traditional marches into an arena. It wasn’t all roses. Terrorist activities marred the opening days, Canada was at the centre of two controversies, an Algerian athlete was reduced to tears because misinformation caused people to question her gender.

Overall, though, a pretty successful event.

But on the flip side, I still have this niggling feeling. Was it all worth it? These Olympics cost billions of dollars to put on. In Sochi, Russia, the most expensive Games ever cost $55 billion. That’s a lot of cash. How much better off would we be if we used some of that to bring more doctors, nurses, care aides and lab techs into the system. How beneficial would it be to build water systems and food supply trains to Third World Countries so those people can have just a small measure of support.

I am a full supporter of the Olympics, but I do wonder sometimes where the line is between extravagance and sheer opulence. And where do the needs of the common man fit into this scenario?

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
