COLLINS: The real work begins now for Build Kamloops

Jul 28, 2024 | 6:00 AM

THE CITY HAS ALREADY APPROVED the use of the alternative approval process (AAP) in the ballot on the Build Kamloops project. The $275-million project would see the construction of a new performing arts centre, a new multiplex arena and work on various smaller projects. The AAP is cheaper than a regular ballot to implement but the results are the same.

Some don’t like the AAP but personally, I think it’s the way to go. If you’re in favour, you don’t have to do anything. If you’re opposed, you have to fill out a form and take it to one of the city’s drop-off points.

It’s good that the city is making only one ballot. That puts lots of pressure on the ‘no’ faction. And that’s because you can’t oppose one without opposing the other. The hockey buffs will have to support the views of the arts aficionados and vice versa.

The job of all will be to convince the naysayers that this project is much needed in our city, that the borrowing cost is small ($25 per year for five years) and if it isn’t passed, we will pay a lot more when we have to have it down the road.

Hopefully, we won’t drop the ball on this like we did with Sandman Centre and other major projects over the years, where we’ve wound up paying a lot more for a lot less. Let’s not drop the ball again.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
