Shetland Creek wildfire grows to 22,000 ha.; evacuation alerts and orders unchanged

Jul 25, 2024 | 8:39 AM

UPDATE (11:00 a.m.): The Dunn Creek wildfire near Little Fort is now measured at 1,260 hectares in size.

The growth is being credited to recent fire activity and more accurate mapping. However, the BC Wildfire Service says nothing is immediately threatened with the new growth.

EARLIER: SPENCES BRIDGE, B.C. — Despite cooler and more humid conditions Wednesday (July 24), the Shetland Creek wildfire continued to see increased fire behaviour due to prolonged drying conditions.

In its latest update Wednesday night, the BC Wildfire Service says winds from the southeast caused increased fire behaviour on the south flank of the wildfire.

The Shetland Creek wildfire is not spreading at a rapid rate and does not pose a threat to Spences Bridge, but smoke will remain highly visible in that community and the Village of Lytton.

Crews are working to construct guard along Murray Creek, connecting to Rannie Pit Road and pushing through the Twaal Valley above Spences Bridge. Crews are also bucketing the area in south Venables Valley to slow the rate of spread.

The Shetland Creek wildfire is now measured at 22,476 hectares in size. It remains south of the Oregon Jack Road near Hat Creek Valley. Evacuation orders and alerts have not been altered.

Elsewhere, evacuation alerts remain unchanged for the 350-hectare Dunn Creek wildfire near Little Fort and the one-hectare Newsome Creek wildfire near Savona.

An evacuation order and alert were issued for Cariboo Regional District properties west of 100 Mile House Wednesday night due to the nearby Moose Valley Wildfire.
