Cedar hedge transfers North Shore shed fire to neighbouring home

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) was called to a structure fire on the Kamloops North Shore at about 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday (July 23), according to KFR captain Jeff Pont.

Smoke was billowing from a shed behind a boarded-up, vacant home at 111 Elm Avenue.

“Crews noted the shed had burned into some cedars between the two homes and the fire travelled up into the gable of the house next door and travelled up into the attic,” Pont said, noting the shed is destroyed.

“Crews were able to put out the shed fire, put out the cedars and get into the attic and extinguish that fire pretty quickly.”

Pont said the damaged house is a home to at-risk youth, none of whom were injured.

KFR is not likely to determine a cause for the shed fire, but Pont said cedars are to blame for the blaze jumping properties.

“I think everybody knows my thoughts on cedars, for sure,” Pont said. “With those cedars adding fuel between those buildings, it has a direct path to get to the home.

“If you’ve got those cedars between your homes, have a discussion with your neighbour. It’s a good example of why you should get rid of them.”
