ASHCROFT, B.C. — The Thompson Nicola Regional District has slightly expanded its evacuation order for the Shetland Creek wildfire, which is nearing 20,000 hectares Monday (July 22).

Mid-morning Monday, the TNRD placed nine more properties on evacuation order, taking them out of the evacuation alert area. That brings the total number of properties on order to 97.

The order now covers all properties between Spences Bridge and Ashcroft on the Trans Canada Highway, as well as all addressed properties within the community of Venables Valley up to Hat Creek Road, to east of Oregon Jack Park Ashcroft Manor.

In an update posted Monday morning, the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) increased the fire size to 19,942 hectares.

BCWS says vigorous fire behaviour on the eastern flank Sunday led to the recommendation to close the Trans Canada Highway in the area.

The fire has spotted over the Murray Creek Forest Service Road in the south and is highly visible in the area of Spences Bridge, but BCWS says it still does not pose an imminent threat to the community.

UPDATE (1:45 p.m.): The District of Logan Lake has issued an evacuation order for the Highland Valley Copper water intake site on the east bank of the Thompson River.
