Sicamous-area fire burning away from community: CSRD

SICAMOUS, B.C. — The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) says a wildfire that broke out on Mara Mountain outside of Sicamous earlier this week is burning away from populated areas.

In an update posted late Saturday afternoon (July 20), the CSRD says the fire just nine kilometres southeast of Sicamous is now measured at about 29 hectares, up from 19 earlier in the day.

The district notes the fire is pushing northeast — away from structures and populated areas.

The fire was discovered Thursday and is believed to have been caused by lightning.

Though it is burning in steep terrain and is hard to access for ground crews, the B.C. Wildfire Service has two heavy helicopters working on snuffing the flames.

The district also says smoke from the fire is becoming more visible to Sicamous residents.

In addition to Mara Mountain, the district says officials are keeping their eyes on three fires discovered Saturday — at Perry River, Upper Probity Peak and Lower Probity Peak. The CSRD describes all three as small fires in remote locations not threatening any structures.
