Student housing project in Salmon Arm delayed

SALMON ARM, B.C. — Okanagan College will not be opening one of its new student housing buildings on time for the fall semester.

The College (OC) announced that construction of the new 60-bed student housing building at the Salmon Arm campus had been delayed by the limited availability of skilled trades workers, as well as the cold snap and wet weather last winter that impacted the work to install drywall.

The building won’t be ready to house students by September, as originally planned, but OC said it was on track to be ready by January of 2025.

“While we had planned for the student housing in Salmon Arm to be completed this summer, that’s just not the reality today, due to factors beyond our control,” Dr. Samantha Lenci, OC’s provost and vice president academic, stated.

“We are reaching out directly to students who indicated they’d be interested in on-campus housing in Salmon Arm this fall, and we will help them identify alternative solutions in the meantime.”

OC noted the new student housing buildings in Vernon and Kelowna campuses were still on track to be ready for residents by September.

Construction of the child care facility at OC Vernon was also still on schedule.
